Introducing to you our speaker, Ties Van de Ven - Software Consultant at JDriven. Ties Van de Ven will grace the DevLead stage with his remarkable expertise on development. Be ready to be inspired and enlightened by him! Before DevTalks happens, we want to get closer to our speakers, so take let’s take a closer look.
# Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
I'm Ties van de Ven from the Netherlands.
In my spare time I like to do bouldering/climbing, travelling and nerd hobbies like Magic the Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons.
I am quite passionate about software engineering fundamentals, and I enjoy sharing knowledge as my way of making the world a slightly better place :)
You can find a bit about me on my website www.tiesvandeven.nl and i'm also active on https://codingcoach.io/ if you need some free help.
# What was your IT journey like?
It started off mostly fixing bugs.
Doing this a lot made me quite good at root cause analysis which eventually led to using more of a functional programming style.
I now try to talk about this a lot so other people can get these insights faster than I did.
# Can you tell us more about your role as a Software Engineer @ JDriven ?
JDriven is a really nice small consultancy company in the Netherlands.
Just like my collegues I try to commit to their core values: Commit, Devlop, Share.
# If you had to sum up your career in one sentence, what would you say?
I could do it in 1 word; growth. I like to grow both professionally and personally, and my career helped me with both.
# What's the coolest tech gadget or tool you've ever owned, and what made it so special to you?
I don't have many gadgets, but I have a few nerdy/sciency things like a periodic table with real elements and sterling engines.
# If you could time-travel to any point in history with a piece of modern technology, where would you go and what would you bring?
I would probably like to meet great engineers like Tesla and show them what their technology led to.
# If you could switch careers with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?
Someone who is currently at the International Space Station so I could take a look at earth from space.
# What's the most unusual or unexpected way you've seen technology being used to solve a problem?
Using the log4shell exploit to fix the log4shell exploit.
# Short overview about what you will talk about at DevTalks 2023?
I will talk about one of my favorite subjects in software engineering; the fundamental problems of software engineering and ways to tackle them.
It will be a bit of an abstract talk about problem solving, but I will try to give practical examples for everything.
So if you like to learn more about programming in general and the underlying concepts, do visit my talk!
# What is your message for our Romania IT community?
I would like to thank them for giving me my very first opportunity to develop myself as a speaker.
DevTalks Romania 2019 was the first time I was invited to speak at a conference, and I had a great time, and everyone was very nice and hospitable :)
